On Importance of Sampling In Digital Communications

The bottom line in sampling is that you need to sample at least twice the highest frequency component.

Here's a flash animation of Sampling from the University of Purdue:

Review flash demo of sampling at the website from Purdue University:  http://www.ecn.purdue.edu/VISE/ee438/demos/flash/sampling.html.

Key questions to think about before viewing video below:

  •   How is the spectrum of the sampled signal output related to the spectrum related the original signal?
  •   A multiplication of two time signals is what type of operation in the frequency domain?
  •  What is  the convolution between an impulse and some function?
  •  Can any periodic sampling function will work as long as it meets the Nyquist Criteria?
  •  What is the Nyquist Theorem?
  •  If I pass a signal that has been appropriately sampled and pass the signal through a bandpass filter centered at the sampling frequency, what does the output of the bandpass filter look like?
