Photoshop Tutorials for Small Business Owners

Logo of Adobe Photoshop.

Image via Wikipedia

Sometimes outsourcing your graphics can be expensive for a small business owners.   So here is collection of tutorials on photoshop.  I’ve used a variety of tutorial videos found on Youtube to help me become more knowledgeable about Photoshop.

As one of the most popular and versatile image editing softwares available today, Photoshop may not only be helpful to professional designers and editors, it may be extremely helpful for small business entrepreneurs as well.

The possibilities are virtually endless with using Photoshop and there is a great deal to learn about this program.
Let’s explore some of reasons why you learn about photoshop in this article:

1.) Photoshop can be used to revive old images in a manner that they become as perfect as new. You can revive old photos or restore old images using various tools such as healing brush, clone stamps, patch corrections tools etc, you can transform the old photograph into a new picture.    Who knows..looking at these photos may spark new ideas where you may use them for  business logos for your letterheads

2.) Learning about Textual Effects in Photoshop could  enhance your sales page to encourage prospects to read it. With the Type Mask Tools, Color Palettes and other techniques, you can add a variety of effects to your text – both online and in Print. Also by using the ‘Move’ tool, you may add text to your pictures. This is a impressive way to create personalized T-shirts with funny slogans & pictures to brand your business. Through simple steps, you can add a whole world of effects to the otherwise dry and plain Text.

3.) Another accepted Photoshop trick is to blend graphics with text – a simple and easy way to create covers for information products such as CD’s, DVD’s and ebooks. You can also use it to add graphics to videos, through specialized editing softwares. Once you have developed some level of expertise with this software, one can manipulate images in numerous ways and improved the presentation of your information products.

4) Through special features such as the artistic brushstrokes, Photoshop allows you to instantly turn common pictures into a work of art. Once you are satisfied with the final results, get it printed on quality paper and hang it on your wall, for the world to see. This is a great way to decorate your home in an economical way.

Photoshop can open up a world of options for you – from turning your pictures into masterpieces, to editing images of all kinds, there is a lot that can be achieved with this editing software. You do not need to be a technology expert or computer expert to work with this digital software, as anyone with even some basic understanding of computers can learn Photoshop and build wonders.

Many people learn Photoshop with Photoshop tutorials available in the market.   Hopefully, the  tutorials below will help you learn the essential components in adobe Photoshop. Learning Photoshop through tutorials is easy, convenient and time saving way.

After viewing the some if not all of the above tutorials, Photoshop offers many helpful features which makes it the first choice for designers wordwide. You can find application of Photoshop in Graphic design, Photo retouching and restoration, Magazine Layout, Brochures, Album/CD/DVD Design, website design etc.

Photoshop serves as a very essential tool for graphic designers but with the above tutorials, small business owners can learn to use it for their marketing use.

There are many alternatives available for Photoshop but Photoshop is just best among them.   As you can see, Photoshop is not just learned by graphic designers, but also  by researchers, students and many other professionals. It’s  inevitable to avoid learning Photoshop if you are in designing field and to save outsourcing cost, learning photoshop will serve as an essential tool.

Entrepreneurship and Innovative Mindset

Given the current state of the economy, entrepreneurship may be the key for many people when it comes to solving their financial situation.

Instilling the entrepreneurial mindset and becoming successful is given by the videos and articles below.

Education is one key to becoming a successful entrepreneur

If you want to be successful as an entrepreneur, education plays a crucial role as well as natural qualities.

What kind of qualities?

To be a successful entrepreneur a number of qualities are needed.  First of all, the individual must have an innovative mindset.

Secondly, you need to convert the idea into reality, this quality is  very importance.  It should have risk taking ability and not to be afraid of failure  also. It often happens that the person concerned feels that torturing sank his money in business than what will happen?

Having a big picture outlook is also important.   Entrepreneurs must have thinking to reach from local neighborhood  to national and national to global.

Can educational institutions prepare entrepreneurs?

Today, to run the business a person needs lots of capabilities, it should have management knowledge in finance, business,  and marketing  which can be learned at educational institutions.

Educational institutions prepare mindset to become entrepreneurs as well as teach how to manage their teams, how to increase their business. Though the idea and enthusiasm remains with the entrepreneur, it is only that educational institutions are taking the idea forward and teach managing business. So education based on entrepreneurship is extremely important. This role will be played by educational institutions today which will give a new direction to prospective entrepreneurs in the future or if our education is such that prepares job seeking managers, in that case, we won’t be able to take our economy further. A country’s economy can only progress when more and more businesses are setting up and it generates more and more jobs.

Here’s more information about entrepreneurship  from Stanford University.

Photoshop CS5.1 Beginner help.?

I basically did my whole year book my senior year in high school. Unfortunately years later-i can’t figure out photoshop-and need to edit some photos. What i’m really having a hard time with is the layers-and cutting images and combining them to make new backgrounds-for example like putting someones head on a different body stuff like that-having a super hard time figuring anything out. I need all the help i can get and if anyone can direct me to video tutorials and such-i’d greatly appreciate it. Got photoshop for dummies but;…..to no avail.

freedomu answers:

If you have a look on the Adobe website there is a selection of tutorials which can help you from even the most basic level, also bare in mind that whilst photoshop is a brilliant piece of software it is also quite complex, maybe look into some more simple software like Gimp (www.gimp.org) or Paint.net (www.paint.net). Also here check the Adobe TV video tutorials at http://tv.adobe.com/product/photoshop/ or failing that… Youtube!

Your Questions About How To Start An Online Small Business

Mary asks…

How to start a small online bead supply business?

I want to start a small online business that sells beads and beading equipment for beading jewellery and other stuff. Can anyone tell me where to start? Or if your a bead lover what you would like to see in the store and what would do want/expect froma bead suppliers?

freedomu answers:

Hi there. If you want just a small online business then maybe your best bet is to start trading on eBay. Try to buy the beads and tools wholesale as this will give you your best profit margin. The beads I like best are Swarovski as you cannot buy better crystal beads and also you would need a range of basic tools too. Different types of thread such as Fireline, Softflex and Nymo would be an advantage as beaders come in all shapes and sizes and also a nice range of low-mid priced beads such as wooden beads (for the surfer ranges) and ceramic beads. Sterling silver always sells well, but also try to stock gold fill too as well as the plated stuff for people just starting out. Vermeil is nice as not a lot of people stock this and try to have a nice range of clasps; Bali silver is always a good bet. The one thing I would suggest is though, try to stock something exclusive that’s really hard to find somewhere else. Do you know anyone who makes their own Boro beads or perhaps polymer clay beads that you could sell exclusively? I hope I have given you some food for thought but have you tried to sell beads at a local market if you have one, just to test the water? I only say this because setting up online (if you aren’t going to use eBay) can be quite costly. Even if you use an online host such as 1-1 or Easyhost (as I first did) you aren’t guarenteed the traffic you will need to make your online business a success. It’s all very well having a great looking site stocked chock full of beading goodies, but if no-one gets to see it, what’s the use? I have recently signed up to SBI! It’s great, but it does take a lot of hard work to build up as it focuses on content first rather than going in for the hard sell and all you have to do is focus on building your site as they do all the behind the scenes hard stuff for you! Take a look, http://ilovesbi.sitesell.com/sarahcassidy.html or if you don’t want to commit to that, theres always this at no cost whatsoever http://affiliatemarketing.sitesell.com/sarahcassidy.html

This is my site if you want to take a look (p.s I’m not selling you anything!)

I hope I’ve helped you in some way, good luck with your venture, whichever path you decide. X

Laura asks…

How to start a small online business?

My friend and I are both college students with low incomes. With college, we don’t have time to get a part time job so we started to talk about ways that we could make a little extra money to help out. We came up with the idea of making an website for an online business. We love photography and crafts so we thought about selling leather crafts such as belts and wallets and photographs of country landscapes in customized frames. Any advice on how to start this sort of business? What would be the best host to start a website with?(We need something very affordable) Would we need to get a business license? How would be go about sending out orders? Would we wait til we got the money or check before shipping the orders out? Please help us get started on this so that we can have some extra money to spend on supplies for the next semester and next year. Thanks!

freedomu answers:

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you’re interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can. Here are some book titles that are relevant:
Online Business For Dummies, 4th Edition by Greg Holden
* How to Start and Maintain A Successful Online Business by Kelly Thornton
* The Complete E-Commerce Book: Design, Build, and Maintain a Successful Web-Based Business by Janice Reynolds

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Charles asks…

What type of banking is needed to start a small online business?

What type of banking is needed to start a small online business?
Hello,

Me and my Friend want to start a website selling items. We are not sure about banking though, what bank account we need and how to open them. We are only 15.

Thanks for your help.

freedomu answers:

You can open an account as sando says but you will still need a bank account to transfer the money to because they do not write checks anymore they do direct deposits. You can also start a merchant account which allows you to use all the major credit cards but of course you need to have a bank account to do this and set it up through them.

As far as a what type of bank account you need is another question. If you plan to run the business as a sole proprietor under your Social Security number then you can open a bank account in your name with a DBA attached to it (Doing Business As) which is what ever you choose to name your business. You want to check to make sure the name you use is not already active or you may be in trademark or copyright infringement.

Since you are doing it with a friend you will most likely set the business up as a partnership and I don’t think you can do this under a basic business license, you may have to incorporate as a limited partnership, it’s something to check out. The banks may also require you to incorporate in order to open a business bank account. The best thing to do is call your local city government and have the question answered about partnerships then talk to the bank to see what is required of you two to open a bank account.

The other problem I see is that you are 15 and the banks may not allow you to open a bank account of any type without a parent or guardian to co-sign the account so check this out. The same applies to forming a business.

Sorry I can’t be of more help but I hope this gets you going in the right direction.

Good luck to you and your friend.

Sandy asks…

How much to start a small online retail business?

Please ONLY answer if you HAVE an online business. Basically, I just need to know what an average monthly price should be for a website that can support a business and have enough bandwidth without causing slow usage. Also, if you have any suggestions for where I should host my domain that would be great. Lastly, if you have started and online retail business please share some tips which could help my effort.

freedomu answers:

I run 5 websites (none in retail though). I can say that this is a hard question to answer. Clearly, overstock.com will cost more to run than joesglass.com. I personally use bluehost.com for hosting, so my monthly expense is under $10 for all 5 sites (non-retail though…). I see anywhere from 8k to 20k visitors monthly with no speed issues. You should probably look into some e-commerece software solutions like this:

http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/ecommerce/

It looks like their starter package is about $40/month, and its scalable in case your business grows unexpectedly.

Carol asks…

How to Start up a Small Online Business?

I would very much like to start up my own small business that is easy and cheap to start up.
I would like to base it online, e.g create my own website.
Then I would like to sell Jewellery and Make-up etc, But where could I buy this cheap and in bulk ?
Also to start this would I need to do any legal documents ?
Thank- you.

freedomu answers:

*Low Start-up Costs – When you decide to start a business online, you can do so with as little as a few hundred dollars and a good idea. However, don’t be misled into believing that the Internet is an arena for instant riches with little or no effort. Nothing could be further from the truth. Like any business, it takes creativity, planning, money and hard work to be successful.
*Multiple Skill Requirements – Suddenly it’s not enough to simply have a good product or service. To use the Internet effectively, you now need to have or be able to acquire skills in graphic design, web server technology, programming, and a brand new marketing medium, not to mention skills needed in multi-lingual translations, international accounting and legal issues. Fortunately, it is not necessary that you have all this knowledge yourself. With the right combination of strategic partners and associates, all of these skills are easily found, if you know where to look. That’s where we come in! We can get you in touch with all the professionals you need to accomplish your task.
*Endless Marketing Possibilities – The opportunities and ease of fostering strategic alliances to bolster marketing efforts is unsurpassed on the Internet. The reason we see so many cooperative relationships between companies online is that doing so has become so simple and so profitable. The advertising industry has found itself with many more possibilities as well as significantly more competition.
*Easily Traceable Results – Another byproduct of business on the internet is that tracking potential customers as a group and visitor preferences is an ordinary part of business on the Internet. See Promotion for more on this topic!
*International Audience – Even if you do not think of your business as an international business, you must recognize that your visitors are likely to be from all over the world. You should consider whether or not you are prepared for international shipping and other transactions with countries other than your own. You should also strongly consider having your website translated onto languages other than English. The percentage of non-US businesses on the Internet has risen dramatically in just the past year! Starting an online business
* Professional Look – If you are a Web Professional who is planning and designing web pages for others, we have a secret to share with you. It’s called the “Proposal Kit”. What it’s done for our company is help us look more professional, charge higher fees and get paid for all of our work. It’s the best investment we have made since we started our business!

Can anyone recommend contacts or recruitment agencies to find marketing jobs in Vancouver?

I am currently based in London England but have an active work visa for Canada and would like to move to Vancouver with my wife. I would like to be able to start the job search process before moving across and am looking for senior level marketing positions.

I have both client and agency experience so could look at both sides. I was Head of Marketing for a Financial Services organisation in the UK till about 2 years ago and have been a Senior Strategic Planner at a Direct Marketing Agency since then. Overall I have 13+ years experience in Direct Marketing and Strategy Development.

freedomu answers:

Hi

I hope your search is going well? I can’t help with any answers but this is just a quick email to say that I’d appreciate it if you could send any useful info my way as I’m just starting out in the same process. Am a DM Account Director, so we’d be looking at similar agencies I guess :-)

Good luck.

Your Questions About How To Start An Online Small Business

Susan asks…

How do you start an online small catalog business?

I would like to start a business online but I’m afraid that I have absolutely no clue as how to start. Is there anyone that has successfully done this who could give me some advice? Thanks to everyone who answers this.

freedomu answers:

Since you’ve never been in business before, I would strongly recommend that you talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. You have to determine whether you’ll start a web based business or one with a store front. I’d call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE.

The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of starting a small online catalog business and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you’ll concentrate on (your market ) and how you’ll go after them.

You’ll need to register the business with your state controller’s office and make sure that you have any city and county licenses if any are needed where you live. All of this will come out in a business plan.
Try this link :

Good Luck

I would like to start a small online business based in the UK..?

I am planning to start an online business (retail industry) based in the UK. Can anyone tell me what are the steps to follow please.I mean how do i get a website and the payment methods etc..Any useful information will be appreciated…thanks

freedomu answers:

You need a website and a domain payments anually. They aren’t too bad really. You’ll need an office or storage for the good you sell. Then you need to register with a government kinda business committee. Because you have to pay tax and stuff whether its coperation or other.

You will also be asked for financial accounts. So have you thought about the ability to correctly do them?

Once everything is in place you could quite easily go to like amazon get your name out there and sell from there or the website. Plus you need to get permission of like banks for people to be assured that the payment is safe online.

Maria asks…

How can a 14 year old start an online business?

Thanks for your time. I look forward to your answer…

freedomu answers:

Decide what you want to sell. You can start from craigs list. They will not be able to pay online. You will need to collect payment when them come to pickup their order.

Your Questions About Entrepreneurship Boston

Joseph asks…

What is a better school for Entrepreneurship Eastern Connecticut State University or Suffolk University?

The cost of Suffolk affects my life post college. In order to open my own business i will need money, if i go to suffolk i will have to take out loans to pay for it. I love boston and Suffolk though. What should i do?

freedomu answers:

Go with the cheapest alternative. Neither one of these schools is highly regarded.

Sharon asks…

Whats a good name for a boston themed sports bar?

Richard asks…

Should I transfer to Boston College?

I am a focussed and motivated student at Syracuse University. I have the chance to be a Finance, Accounting, and Entrepreneurship and Emerging Enterprises triple major in the Whitman School of Management, which is ranked 42nd in the country by BusinessWeek.com. Or, I have the choice to be a Public Relations, Television Radio Film (Management), or Advertising (Management) major in the SI Newhouse Communications School, which is one of the top schools in the country. Whichever choice I take, I feel may change my life down the road one way or another. I am not so passionate one way or the other about the subjects, I am just a focussed student. Which path do you think I would be better off taking? Should I transfer for Boston College if I get the chance? Please state your expertise or background when answering the question. Thanks so much for your help, this is one of the biggest decisions I will have to make. THANKS!

freedomu answers:

First off, Syracuse is a great school. It would be tough to compare it against BC because both are very well-respected, and you can get a top notch education at either one. The Whitman School is a very good school, and you wouldn’t go wrong there, but the Newhouse School is, by far, one of the best among communication/media/journalism programs in the country. I’d suggest factoring other things into the equation as well such as cost of living. Syracuse is relatively cheap and much easier to live in than Boston. Boston, however, is just an overall amazing, American city with so much to offer. Think long enough and you’ll come up with a huge list of trade-offs.

I would say that eventually you will need to find a passion, or at the very least an area that you’re good at and work your hardest to become the best at it. Many people study a subject in college that they don’t even end up practicing in their careers, but that doesn’t mean you should arbitrarily study modern dance with hopes of becoming a neurosurgeon. :)

My background: Bachelors and Masters degree, previously worked as a journalist, now working in government and public policy.

Paul asks…

What are some good business groups to get involved in during the summer?

I really want to run my own business out of college. I just completed my freshman year of college and I’m in business undecided. Are there any real life or online business clubs, groups, or organizations for advancing knowledge of perhaps entrepreneurship and other business studies that would look good on a resume if it doesn’t work out? Even if it doesn’t, are there some? I know of one, DECA, but I wonder if there is anymore.

I live in the Boston area.

freedomu answers:

The junior chamber of commerce is excellent.

William asks…

What major would I be better off in at Syracuse University?

Thanks so much for your help, this is one of the biggest decisions I will have to make. THANKS!

Boston College clearly ranks higher than Syracuse overall and if you ever wanted to go on to grad school including MBA or law school, you would be MUCH better off if you graduated from BC.

If you stay at Syracuse, their communications school is clearly one of their best assets. The TRF sounds like it combines your interest in communications with your interest in management.

There are going to be lots of changes in the media field in the upcoming decade with the growth of high speed internet and user generated content. This could be a very hot field.

Remember though that college gives you a background in liberal arts with a concentration in a professional field. But it doesn’t set your career path for life. The most important thing is to enjoy your few precious years in college!
